Idea #675 – Looking at the sun set in the desert of Lompoul in Senegal
The desert of Lompoul is a desert area located in northwestern Senegal, halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis. Its area is 18 km². The desert of Lompoul gives a taste of the great deserts of Mauritania, located further north. It is nowadays a rather popular destination because it is more secure than the other desert spaces of the Sahel-Saharan space, notably Mali, Niger and Mauritania, where the specter of terrorist attacks hangs. The dunes can reach a height of 40 to 50 m. The sand with ocher tones, even red, is very fine, carried by the winds. There is almost no vegetation. Accommodation can be done in a camp of Moorish tents, called khaïmas. A camel ride at sunset, a delicious mechoui tasted under the stars, a vigil with the sound of djembes make the experience unique.
