Idea #828 – Exploring Cahuita Park’s wildlife
Cahuita National Park is a national park located in the La Amistad Caribbean Conservation Area of Costa Rica, located on the southern Caribbean coast. It consists of protected beaches and plains, as well as a marine area made up of coral reefs. It covers a land area of 1106 ha and a marine area of 22,300 ha.
The 242 ha Cahuita Park reef is known to be home to at least 35 species of corals, 140 species of molluscs, 44 species of crustaceans and 123 species of fish. From February to April, underwater visibility is generally best. The outer reef is approximately 4 km long. The beach is a nesting ground for sea turtles, and is also considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved beaches in Costa Rica.
On land, many animal species are found in Cahuita Park, including northern tamanduas, pacas, white-nosed coatis, raccoons, sloths, agoutis, mantle howlers, and white-headed capuchins. Cahuita Park is also home to a variety of birds, including the green ibis, the green and rufous kingfisher, and the keeled toucan.
