Idea #770 – Visiting the large market of Ason Tole in Kathmandu
Asan (in Nepali: असन ), also called Asan Tole, Asan Twāh or Asan Bazaar, designates a district of the city of Kathmandu, known for its huge market. Asan has been described as one of the most representative Newar examples of a traditional Asian bazaar.
Six streets converge on Asan, the place is thus constantly agitated by the movements of the crowd, two wheels, visitors, and buyers from all over Kathmandu. The natures of goods sold cover almost the entire universe of possibilities ranging from food products, spices and textiles to electronics and ingots. Thematic areas are globally defined by the grouping of merchants.
Asan is also one of the popular tourist spots for Kathmandu walking tour in the city due to its architectural remains and ambiance. In practice, you should not have two wheels that shave you, and wear an FFP2 mask if you want to survive pollution. Be careful, as a Westerner, you can be exposed to many scams – we bought Himalayan pepper there… without grain, only the vegetable pods!
