Idea #512 – Visiting the archeological site of Areni1 in Armenia
Areni-1 is an archaeological cave situated next to the village of Areni in Armenia along the river Arpa in the region of Vayots Dzor. Excavated for more than 10 years, the cave Areni-1 was the place of remarkable archaeological discoveries, as the oldest shoe in the world or the oldest winepress in the world.
The leather shoe, found under a jar, is 5 500 years old. Its age exceeds this of Ötzi, the prehistoric mummy, of a few hundred years. The shoe is kept into the museum of Yerevan.
The excavations allowed to bring to light also an old wineriy of 6 100 years old, including a rudimentary press and a tank of clay, surrounded with grape seeds, where the vineyard dried out, and rests of grapes pressed, as well as shards of pottery and even a cup and a bowl with drink.
