Idea #409 – Swimming down the Somoto canyon in Nicaragua
Situated at 2 am in the North of Esteli, the canyon of Somoto was discovered a few years ago by Czech scientists. Its fissure, of 4.7km long and 100m deep, was digged by the spring of the Rio Coc, which throws into the Caribbean Sea. This geological formation presents a unique character: indeed, the Rio Coconut dug its vertiginous gorges in a rock of particularly hard volcanic origin. The site also presents the vestiges of a place of worship dating the pre-Colombian period, containing petroglyphs and ritual paints.
A local family takes today care with proposing the discovery of this site thanks to aquatic hikes : walking, swimming in the canyon, jumping, the options are varied. The immensity of gorges is worth spending one day for the adventurers there.
