Idea #694 – Visiting the historic city of Bourges
Chief town of Berry and today classified City of Art and History, Bourges has a beautiful historic city center to discover on foot. More than 400 half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries make up the historic center. The protected sector of Bourges, extended over 64 ha, was created in 1965; it covers all the area included inside the Gallo-Roman rampart, as well as a good part of the medieval city included in the enclosure of XIIe century.
While walking towards the Saint-Etienne cathedral or the Jacques Coeur Palace, follow the marked itinerary which allows you to discover all the richness and the diversity of the architectural heritage of Bourges: Gothic, Renaissance and Classical hotels, churches and houses in pan-de -wood. The main circuit follows the perimeter of the Gallo-Roman rampart that conditioned the evolution of the medieval streets, separating the “city” – the upper town with its aristocratic houses – from the lower market town. This layout is still present today in the parcellaire and urban roads. Come on, let’s wander!
