Idea #682 – Flying over the Dune du Pilat at low altitude
In this episode, we will fly over the dune of Pilat! Culminating the passes of the Bassin du Haut from its 114 meters, the dune of Pilat – or Pyla – is the highest coastal dune in Europe. Enriched by the constant contribution of wind sands removed by the wind to the immense banks that have appeared over the centuries, and which have accompanied the slow movement of the passes to the south, this huge mass representing 60 million cubic meters of sand, prelude to a long cord of more than one hundred kilometers. Gnawed on the west side by the wind and the ocean, it leans in the East to a magnificent pine forest that it gradually buries.
The ascent of this mound of sand is not easy, however, once its summit is reached, what a joy! We walked it (#681: Climb the dune of Pilat, the highest dune in Europe)but we propose you to take the height: another idea is to enjoy the panorama on board a plane, and to fly over the dune of Pilat, with views of the ocean, the inland sea of the Arcachon basin, the islands and the Landes forest is unforgettable in beauty. This is where the notion of “wide open spaces” takes on its full meaning… We take off, with in addition a real fighter pilot of the French Army at the controls!
