Idea #627 – Going on pilgrimage to the tomb of Mukhamad Bachoro in Tajikistan
The mausoleum of Mukhamad Bachoro, a Muslim missionary, born in Basra in 743. The mausoleum was built in the eleventh century, then was restored and enlarged thereafter, especially in the fourteenth century. It is composed of a central building surmounted by a dome, and a summer mosque. In 1332, an imposing portal completed the ensemble. The building is especially remarkable for the beauty of the decorations of its portal made of carved terracotta and glazed bricks; many animals are represented, including fish, which is very rare – because forbidden – in Islamic art.
Inside, an imposing tree trunk would be dated from the first construction of the mausoleum, and would have served as a central pillar. The tomb of Mukhamad Bachoro is visible inside, as well as those of several members of his family, and a well filled ossuary … A cell allows to withdraw here, for a spiritual withdrawal which must last 40 days. The mausoleum is one of the important pilgrimages that every good believer in Central Asia has to make.
