Idea #543 – Observing the desert Lions in Namibia
The lions are among the most recognizable big cats: a fawn a little more clear bushy coat, the stomach and a tail. They have five fingers on legs before and four fingers on the back legs, with completely retractable sharp claws. Males, recognizable in their mane, are powerful. The lions are the biggest carnivores of Namibia. The male adults weigh between 160 and 240 kg and the grown-up females between 100 in 170 kg.
The distribution of the lions in Namibia is limited to the National park of Etosha, the Reserve of Kaudom, certain parts of districts Tsumkwe, region of Kunene, and region of Caprivi. This vast territory, established by protected spaces and by dry hyper environments, shelters a population about 150 lions, growing – it did not count it more than about twenty 30 years ago. This growth brings the lions to spread their territories, not without conflict with the human beings. The lions often Attack pets and the breeders react by killing the lions in the rifle or by poisoning to protect their cattle.
The implementation of a project of preservation of the lions of the desert of Namib covers a 51.380 km surface ² since the region of Kunene which includes Palmwag, concessions Etendeka and Hobatere, park of Skeleton Coast and bordering municipal academies. He will maybe allow to protect this remarkable species.
