Idea #483 – Visiting the historic city of Şamaxı in Azerbaijan
Samaxi, also named Chemakha is a city of Azerbaijan and the capital of the raïon of Chamakhi. The city counts 30 000 inhabitants.
The city of Samaxi was the historic, economic and administrative capital of Shahs de Chirvan. During its history, important earthquakes destroyed Samaxi, but the latter was reconstructed many times by its inhabitants because of its role of capital but also destination stage of the Silk route. Nevertheless, the capital will eventually moved and Samaxi will know then a phase of importing decline.
The only urban building to have survived for many earthquake is the Mosque of Djouma, established in 743, restored at many times, in particular in 2009. Old mausoleums, partially in ruins, are rorth being seen. Yeddi Gumbaz’s cemetery of the XVIIIth century dedicated to the last dynasty of the khans of the Chirvan, is one of the most beautiful of the country. We can also recommended the Shakhandan’s cemetery, dedicated to the national poet Nizami’s brother, of the XVIIth century.
