Idea #434 – Visiting the renaissance castle of Chenonceau
The castle of Chenonceau is situated in the municipality of Chenonceaux in Indre-et-Loire, in France. The castle counts in the group of castles collectively called the “castles of the Loire”. Chenonceau has the originality to have been built, fitted out and transformed by women, quite very different due to their temperament. The first castle is founded in the XIIIth century by the family Marques. In 1513, it is reconstructed by Katherine Briçonnet, enriched by Diane of Poitiers and enlarged under Catherine de Medici. It becomes a place of meditation with the white queen Louise de Lorraine, then it is protected by Louise Dupin during the French Revolution and finally, transformed by madam Pelouze. This is the way is nicknamed the castle of the Ladies…
The whole domain, property of the family Menier, welcomes annually 850 000 visitors. The castle is classified in conformance with historic monuments, registred with the Loire valley on the UNESCO world heritage list.
