Idea # 34: Diving on the Gustavia’s wreck
The cargo of 49 meters by 7.50 meter, was launched in 1953 under the name of Géocéanique. It was renamed Gustavia in 1982 and performs cabotage between the different Caribbean islands. In 1989, the 17th of September, Hurricane Hugo (category 5) devastated the island of Guadeloupe. In the port of Pointe a Pitre, Gustavia, remained docked, and was damaged by waves against the docks ; it will subsequently declared unfit for navigation, due to numerous damage. It is cast to get sunk as artificial reef in 1991, at about 1 mile from the rock of Malendure. The wreck lies upright on a sandy bottom, by 40 meters of deepth. The wreck is very rich in sponges and colorful fishes, inhabited by many barracudas . Off to Adventure!
