Idea # 294 – Visiting the Glendalough monastic site in Ireland
Glendalough (in Irish: Gleann Dá Loch, the “valley between both lakes”) is a village of Ireland situated in the mountains of Wicklow, established on the site of a ancient convent, based in the VIth century by saint Kevin, a priest hermit. This last one, looking for a peaceful place for its pension, was followed by several followers, who built at first a temporary hamlet, who becomes, in the measure of its popularity, one of the main universities of religion in Ireland. The convent is destroyed by the English in 1398. The site includes a 33 metres high round tower, a ancient bell tower with defensive vocation, a paleochrétian chapel, the ruins of a church, the house of the prior, and the cross of holy Kevin. Let’s go visiting !
