Idea #281 – Visiting the castles of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
Castles and vestiges of the medieval fortresses count among the main places of interest of the Grand duchy of Luxembourg. On 109 castles listed in the Middle Ages, 76 of them resisted more or less well the assaults of time. Desired in the course of the centuries by numerous foreign powers, the first vocation of these castles was the military defense.
A lot of them raise themselves on a rocky spur, dominating a sinuous valley. Other, rarer, are situated in the valley, formerly surrounded with for a long time dried up moats. Certain castles are accessible to the visitors and are still impressive by their size or degree of preservation. Among these castles, it is necessary to quote the castles of Vianden, Beaufort, Bourscheid, Clervaux, or Larochette. The ruins of castles, fascinating witnesses of the past, can be also discovered by the public. The most interesting are to Dudelange, Esch-sur-Sûre, Hesperange, Koerich, Pettingen / Mersch and Useldange.
