Idea #228 – Visiting wooden churches and villages of Maramures in Romania
Maramures is a region of Romania enclosed in the northeast of Romania, in the border of Hungary and Ukraine. It is a kind of alive museum, because it knew how to protect its ancestral customs and its popular culture. The rural life seems to have congealed over the centuries in these hilly and green landscapes, where nest wooden mainly built tiny villages. The rustic houses are decorated with impressive wooden halls sculptured, which symbolize the passage of the outside world has the intimacy of the house. They protect agianst the evil spirit from the outside. These gates consist of three pillars of oak, decorated with wooden sculptures, opening on a pedestrian door and a door charretière. The set is covered with a small roof, even more finely decorated. The region is also considered as its old wooden churches in disentangled bell towers, decorated with frescoes. In the valleys of Mara and Iza, eight of these churches, situated in the villages of Bârsana, Budesti, Desesti, Ieud, Plopis, Poienile Izei, Rogoz and Surdesti, appear since 1999 on the list of the World heritage. They are a particular expression of the civilization valaque mountain dweller of the North of Romania.
