Idea #167 – Diving with Bull Sharks in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
The shark-bulldog or the shark of the Zambezi (Carcharhinus leucas) is a shark of the family of Carcharhinidés. it can reach 3,40 meters in length. The back is of a grey or brown color olive, with the darker extremity of fins, and a whitish stomach. It holds its name of his its rather massive and thickset appearance. Its snout is flattened. Its jaw has wide, triangular and very indented superior teeth, and vertical and sharp lower teeth. This shark can go back up estuaries in brackish waters and it is thus possible to cross it in fresh water (the Ganges, the estuaries of South Africa, etc.) Its food is very varied, just like the tiger shark : turtles, other sharks, fishes of sea water and fresh water, mammals, birds, squids what makes him rather dangerous for the man. This shark is the author of several surfers’ fatal accidents, which saddened the Island of Reunion. To observe it, we went to Mexico, to Playa del Carmen; the dives are made in the day, except the hours of hunting thus, with a bait held on a rifle harpoon, to try to convince itself that we control the situation…
