Idea #708 – Following the coffee culture in Retalhuleu Guatemala
The “coffee belt” is the geographical area where this product is consumed all over the world, it is delimited by the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. It is in this imaginary zone that Guatemala is located, a country known for its solid coffee industry. Guatemala and its coffee industry is a reference when it comes to the cultivation of this product in the world, because it is an activity that has historically been of great importance to the economy of this country. Thus, as has happened in other countries of the continent, as was the case for Venezuela, the first coffee plant that grew in Guatemala was sown by a Jesuit in the mid-1700s. that the latter could have been imported from Cuba or Puerto Rico.
But it was not until 1853 that Guatemalan aromatic coffee became the main export product of the country. From 1970, the coffee culture spreads all over the country. During this decade, we began to plant in areas other than the traditional ones of San Marcos and Retalhuleu, until arriving at Antigua Guatemala, where is cultivated the organic grain which is today the object of a world renown . Thanks to its mineral-rich soils and stable climate, coffee has earned a reputation for excellence and has won numerous awards, including the “Best Café du Monde” award, obtained in Paris during the 1889 international exhibition, and had the same recognition during the San Francisco Exhibition in 1915.
