Idea #278 – Visiting the Castle of Vaux le Vicomte
The castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte, situated on the territory of the French municipality of Maincy, in 50 km in the South is from Paris near Melun, was built castle bewenn 1658 et 1661, for the superintendent of the finances of Louis XIV, Nicolas Fouquet. Fouquet asked the best artists of time to build this castle : the architect Louis Le Vau, the first architect of the king, the painter Charles Le Brun, the founder of the Academy of painting, the landscape painter André Le Nôtre, the general controller of the buildings of king, and mason-master Michel Villedo.
Their talent had already been combined by the young person Louis XIV to build the castle of Vincennes in 1651-1653. King will reused them to build the Palace of Versailles, that of Vaux-le-Vicomte serving then as model. The castle, the masterpiece of the classic architecture of the middle of the XIIth century, is the most important private property classified as historic monuments since its purchase in July, 1875 by Alfred Sommier today who acted as sponsor, pursued by his descendants, the Vogüe family.
