Idea # 265 – Visiting the city of Trier
Trier is a city of Germany, in Land of Rhineland-Palatinate. In the year 17 BC, a Roman colony was founded, known under the name of Augusta Treverorum, on the site of the administrative center of Trévires. It was so recognized as the most old town of Germany. The stone Roman bridge, which crosses the Moselle was built in 45 AD, as a replacement of a first wooden bridge : it is also the oldest bridge, still standing, of Germany. To protect it, the antique city had been endowed with a surrounding wall, sheltering the biggest urban surface in Gaul, that is 282 hectares.
.The Porta Nigra, monumental strengthened gate, become the symbol of the city, as well as some foundations of outer walls. Big metropolis from the IIth century, the city became one of the capitals of Tétrarchie at the end of the IIIth century and seat of an imperial monetary workshop. From 294, Trier had been then qualified as ” second Rome ” or Roma Secunda. At the beginning of the 5th century, during the Germanic invasions, Trier was attacked and plundered several times by Francs. It remarkable group of Roman ruins was worth to it being classified in the UNESCO world heritage in 1992. Go, we study that in detail !
