Idea # 220 – Exploring the volcanic sites and extreme landscapes of Iceland
Iceland has an area 103 000 km and a population of around 320,000 inhabitants. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavik. Iceland has a oceanic climate, under the influence arctic cold winds usually rainy, which is the source of many rivers and waterfalls . Located 66 ° North , the island has been in the polar day, and in winter … the endless night! Iceland is also on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, separating the tectonic plates Eurasian and North American ; a point of view of plate tectonics, the northwest part of Iceland is on the American plate and the south-east is on the Eurasian plate. Volcanic activity is therefore in very high ; one can observe eruptive trench and many phenomena paravolcaniques like solfataras and hot springs or geysers. The landscapes were carved and offers many surprises visitors . Beware, it smells of sulfur.
