Idea # 118 – Visiting the South of England
Set against Harold in his claims in the throne of England, William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, lands in England on September 29th, 1066 at dawn, at the head of 15 000 men and 3 000 horses. October 14th, Norman and Saxon armies take a stand face to face on the hill of Santlache, that the Normans will rename Senlac and who corresponds to the current town of Battle, to eight kilometers in the North of Hastings. The confrontation lasts a whole day, of nine o’clock in the morning at nightfall, and ends in Guillaume’s victory.
To discover the lands which the Conqueror traveled almost 1000 years ago, nothing more simple: embark in Calais by Eurotunnel, land to Folkstone, then let carry you by the small roads which follow the coast (hold your left!), and visit Dover, Portchester, Rye, Canterbury, Lewes, Hastings, Battle, to finish to Portsmouth or a little higher, in Wiltshire, to Stonenhenge(see idea # 117: Pilgrimage to Stonehenge ). A beautiful English weekend, can be well in the rain :).
